Adventure Trail
Pure Carolina is pure adventure. Visitors can run rapids, scale mountains, or ride a horse through the countryside. There are opportunities to pedal along pastoral paths, paddle through unsullied waterways, or do some freshwater fishing.
Pursuits like fly-fishing, panning for gold, and camping appeal to all ages and skill levels, while adrenaline-inducing activities like whitewater rafting, parachuting, and rock climbing are best left to those with a bold nature.
Outdoor lovers shouldn’t miss Lake Norman, the state’s largest inland body of water. Originally build for the generation of electricity, the lake sparks the imagination of water-skiers, boaters, kayakers, and swimmers. Nature preserves provide unspoiled backdrops for hiking, horseback riding, and fishing.
The new U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte features the world’s largest artificial whitewater river for rafting and kayaking. Those who prefer land-based activities can take to the Center’s mountain biking and hiking trails. Rock climbing and zip line courses are available for those who like aerial views.
More adventure can be found at the Piedmont’s amusement parks. Carowinds is the largest theme park in the area. Just south of Charlotte, the vast complex features roller coasters, wild water rides, and more sedate family rides. For those who want to get even more wet and wild, there are several other water parks and aquatic centers sprinkled throughout the region.
